VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) junior Whitney Johnson was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the week Monday after helping the Lady Hawks to a 2-1 record at the UMBC Tournament over the weekend.

Johnson, an outside hitter and native of Frederick, Md., averaged 15.3 kills and a .333 hitting percentage for the tournament. She tallied 25 kills in a 3-2 win over the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), the first for Hawks against the Retrievers since 1986. Johnson contributed another 16 kills to a 3-1 win over Niagara and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Freshman outside hitter Christine Edwards (Lakewood, Calif.) also garnered other top performer honors for her efforts. Edwards totaled 49 kills and 38 digs in the three matches in Baltimore.

UMES (3-3) is back in action next weekend at the Ramada Invitational in Buffalo, N.Y., facing Butler, Buffalo and Maine.
