HAWK TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF UMES ATHLETICS (SEPTEMBER 2ND THROUGH 8TH)

PRINCESS ANNE, MD. – The fall semester is underway and UMES Athletics had several key announcements including women’s basketball welcoming new assistant coach, Jasmine Blanton, and men’s golf releasing their 2013 fall schedule. Additionally, men’s & women’s cross-country and women’s volleyball were in action as well.
In case you missed it, here’s a quick recap:
Women’s basketball was pleased to announce Jasmine Blanton as their new assistant coach. Blanton will fulfill the role of the graduate assistant for the team as the third assistant for Head Coach Fred Batchelor.
Last season, Blanton was named to the All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIVAC) First-Team after leading West Virginia State University (WVSU) with 18.0 points per game (ppg). During her junior year, Blanton was named a WVIAC Honorable Mention.
Prior to her arrival at WVSU, Blanton played two seasons at Owens Community College (CC) in Toledo, Ohio (OH). In summer 2011, Blanton was as an assistant coach for an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) women’s basketball team where she developed guards and assisted with the day-to-day responsibilities of the head coach.
Javierelle & Shaquille Turner (Staten Island, NY), Codjo Gbedo (New Carrolton, MD), and Alonzo Jarmon (Bowie, MD) lead the way for men’s cross-country while the team will look for the newcomers to contribute, such as Freshman Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain), transfers Derrick Cheruiyot (University of Arkansas-Little Rock) and Mark Tuwie (Oklahoma Panhandle State University), and walk-on Nassor Whitehead (Sunrise, FL).
This past Saturday, men’s cross-country finished second in the UMES Lid-Lifter and saw two UMES runners finished in the top-10. Newcomers Rmidi Kinini and Cheruiyot finished 8th and 10th, respectively. Rmidi Kinini had a 16:42:07 while Cheruiyot finished 16:51:06.
On the women’s side, Annis Mars (Brooklyn, NY), Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine, Jamaica), and Jheniel Kelly (Edgewood, MD) return this season to lead the women’s cross-country while newcomers Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, MD) and Margret Wilcot-Francis (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) will be seeing action this season.
Last Saturday, women’s cross-country finished third in the UMES Lid-Lifter with 87 points. Halmon lead the way finishing 12th with a 20:39:29. Hemley, Wilcot-Francis, and Kelly finished 16th, 17th and 18th, respectively.
Last week, UMES Golf released their 2013 fall schedule. This season, the golf team will participate in four tournaments with stops in Georgia (GA), Pennsylvania (PA), and South Carolina (SC).
The team will begin in Myrtle Beach, SC to participate in the Myrtle Beach Fall Invitational (Sept. 23-24). Then, the team heads down south to Atlanta, GA to compete in the National Black College Hall of Fame Invitational (Sept. 26-28). Next, the Hawks travel to Pittsburgh, PA to compete in the Holiday Inn Colonial Classic (Oct. 6-8).
The golf team will wrap-up their season in Savannah, GA to participate in the Tiger Invitational (Nov. 8-10). This is the third consecutive season the golf team has competed in this tournament.
Last weekend, the women’s volleyball team traveled north to compete in the Sacred Heart University Invitational. The Lady Hawks lost all three contests to Manhattan College (Riverdale, NY), Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, CT), and American University (Washington, DC).
Newcomer Petra Jerabkova (Czech Republic) made her debut against Manhattan and posted nearly a triple double with 15 kills, 21 assists, and nine digs.
In the second match against Sacred Heart, Jerabkova had another strong performance with 12 assists and 12 digs. Senior Jingqiao Li (Bejing, China) had 21 digs while Haley Robinson (Honolulu, Hawaii) contributed with six blocks and five kills.
In the third match, Li led the Lady Hawks with 17 digs versus American while Allison Woods (Magnolia, Texas) added six digs. Robinson and Lauren Berry (Bloomington, Illinois) had two block assists each.
