HAWKS PLAY TOUGH IN CALIFORNIA, BUT STILL FALL

PRINCESS ANNE, MD- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (7-6) played in the University of San Diego (USD) Invitational this past weekend taking fourth place.
The Hawks first played the #19 ranked Long Beach State University and fell in three games with the scores 30-23, 30-13, 30-23. However, Jana Milin had 18 kills and 10 digs while Sande Dzile had 29 assists. University of San Diego Toreros were the next team to play the Hawks and notched scores of 30-19, 30-15, 30-17. In this match, Jana earned 8 kills and 5 digs. For their last match of the tournament, they faced the Fresno Bulldogs and landed scores of 30-22, 30-19 and 30-16. Jana earned 18 kills and 13 digs while Sanda earned 232 assists and Dori Ganoza had 10 digs for this match-up.
Despite the turnout of the Invitational, Jana totaled 44 kills and 25 digs for the Hawks while Sande Dzile notched 79 assists. For Jana's performance, she was also named to the USD Invitational All-Tournament Team. "Even though we did not come out with a win, this weekend gave the ladies insight into playing ranked teams. They will be able to take this experience with them to sharpen their skills for the remainder of this season," said Coach Toby Rens.
USD upset the five-time National Champions and #19 ranked Long Beach State University for the Tournament Championship in three straight games. San Diego won by scores of 35-33, 30-28, 30-24. The Torero's Devon Forster was the MVP of the Tournament and also made the All-Tournament Team along with her teammates Christie Dawson and Lindsey Sherburne.
UMES will host the UMES Invitational this weekend starting on Friday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m. and will end with last match on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. They will play Texas Southern University, Belmont University, University of Buffalo, and Seton Hall University.
