VAITAI, CECIL NAMED PRMC UMES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Oct. 1, 2012
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week were announced today and juniors Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.) were named the recipients for the week of October 1. This is the first time that either student-athlete has been distinguished with the award this season.
Vaitai accepts the award after a pair of solid performance this past week. It was her effort that led the Hawk to a 2-0 record on the week, including a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contests. The Salt Lake City, Utah native began the week with 13 kills, four digs and one block in the Hawks' 3-0 victory at Delaware State on Tuesday. She would go on to post 19 kills, 13 digs and one block in UMES' 3-2 victory over Howard on Sunday. Vaitai led the Hawks in kills in both games and concluded the week with 32 altogether.
Cecil was the second highest finisher for the Hawks at the Rehoboth Beach Invitational last Monday. In UMES' season opener, Cecil used scores of 83 and 81 to finish with a 164, good for 46th place overall. He also helped his effort with a hole-in-one, which proved to be the first one in the history of the program. The junior also competed in the National Black College Hall of Fame golf tournament this past week and was one of the top finishers for the Hawks at the event.
