PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team looks to get back on track after dropping their last two contests. Tomorrow (10/11), the Lady Hawks head back to Baltimore, MD to face Morgan State. On Sunday (10/13), the team heads south to battle Hampton. Currently, both conference foes are undefeated in their respective homes.

LAST MATCH

The Lady Hawks lost to Coppin State, 3-0. The team dropped the first set, 25-13. In the second set, UMES battled back and came up just short in tying the match, 25-23. In the third set, the Lady Hawks rallied to take the lead late in the set, but the Eagles would reclaim the lead for the match sweep, 25-22.

TOP PERFORMERS

Freshman Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) had her third consecutive 30+ assist performance in the loss (34). Rosales is the last freshman to have three straight 30+ assist outings since Jessica Vicic (2011). At the moment, Rosales sits tenth in the conference with 5.58 assist per set.

Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) led the Hawk attack with nine kills followed by Haley Robinson’s (Honolulu, HI) eight kills. Robinson also had a .533 hitting percentage in the loss. Currently, Robinson has a .226 hitting percentage this season, which is eighth in the conference.

Last Sunday, Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) tallied 15 digs against the Eagles. Today, Li averages 4.52 digs per set, which is second in the conference behind Coppin State’s Gabrielle Otero (4.56).

Rosales and Diara Lewis (Columbia, SC) each added seven digs in the loss.


 

 

MATCHUP PREVIEWS

UMES enters Friday night’s contest against the Lady Bears, 2-13 overall (1-2 MEAC) whereas Morgan State comes in 6-11 overall (1-3 MEAC), including a victory over Delaware State, 3-0. Since 2002, the Lady Hawks have won 18 of the last 26 meetings against the Lady Bears, including the last 12 meetings. The last loss to Morgan State was November 9, 2006.

Defensively, both teams enter among the best in the conference. UMES leads the dig category in the conference (13.68) while the Lady Bears are second in opponent hitting percentage (.187) behind Howard (.166). Morgan State’s Sophomore Samantha Prescott is seventh in the conference with 2.98 digs per set while UMES’ Li is second (4.52).

Hampton enters Sunday afternoon’s matchup 10-8 overall (4-0 MEAC), including last Sunday’s victory, 3-0, over Howard. Since 2002, UMES leads the series, 24-3. The Lady Hawks have won five out of the last six contests. Last season, the Lady Pirates snapped UMES’ 23-match winning streak in conference play, 3-1.

Hampton tops the conference in multiple categories led by Junior Vendula Strakova. The Lady Pirates lead the conference in hitting percentage, assist per set, kills per set, and blocks per set. Currently, the team averages 1.75 aces per set, which is 13th in the nation. Strakova leads the nation in two categories: points per set and kills per set. Strakova averages 6.63 points per set while accumulating 5.69 kills per set. At this time, Strakova averages 0.53 aces per set, which is ninth in the nation.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

After Sunday afternoon’s match, the team continues its road trip. Next Friday, the Lady Hawks head back to Virginia to take on Norfolk State. On Sunday, UMES travels to Dover, DE in a re-match against the Hornets of Delaware State University. Match times are 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
