BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team dropped a tough match to the Lady Bears of Morgan State University, 3-1. With the loss, the Lady Hawks fall to 2-14 overall (1-3 MEAC) while Morgan State improved to 7-11 overall (2-3 MEAC).

Freshman Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) produced her fourth straight 30+ assist performance this season (34) while tallying five digs, five kills, and an ace. Fellow freshman Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI) had another strong performance by leading the team in kills (14) Friday night. Robinson also accumulated a .300 hitting percentage. Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) added 13 digs in the loss, which led the team.

In the first set, UMES would trail, 5-2, before calling their first timeout of the match. After the short break, the Lady Hawks would score a point on an error, but would dig themselves into a deeper hole. The team would call another timeout after being down, 11-4. After the second timeout, the Lady Hawks would make a run by scoring seven of the next nine points to pull within three, 14-11, including two Lady Bear errors, Allison Woods’ (Magnolia, TX) ace, and Diara Lewis’ (Columbia, SC) kill. Morgan State would call their first timeout of the match. After Morgan State’s timeout, UMES would continue the momentum and tie the first set, 20-20, on Lauren Berry’s (Bloomington, IL) kill, forcing Morgan State to call another timeout. After the short intermission, Morgan State would score the last five out of eight points to escape and take the first set, 25-23.

In the second set, both teams would nearly trade point-for-point in the first 22 points of the set, including Li’s lone kill of the match to tie the set, 11-11. The Lady Bears would gain a little momentum by scoring the next three points, 14-11, forcing the Lady Hawks to take a timeout. After UMES’ timeout, the team would score the next two points on an error and an ace by freshman Precious Manu (Carson, CA), cutting the Lady Bears’ lead to one, 14-13. Morgan State would regain their composure to score the next five points to take a commanding 19-13 lead late in the set. The Lady Hawks would continue to battle, but the deficit would be too deep to overcome. UMES would fall, 25-17, in the second set and trail the match, 2-0.


 

 

In the third set, the young Lady Hawks would refuse to go down without a fight. Both teams would exchange points throughout the match until UMES would create separation. After taking a 16-15 lead, the Lady Hawks’ Robinson would score the next two points on a kill followed by an ace, extending the lead to 18-15. Morgan State would call a timeout to slow down UMES’ hot streak. After the timeout, the Lady Bears would score the next five out of seven points to tie, 20-20. The Lady Hawks responded by scoring the next three points to reclaim the lead, forcing Morgan State to take their second timeout of the set, 23-20. The Lady Bears would make a run, but the Lady Hawks withstood the late rally to take the third set, 25-23.

In the fourth set, freshman Moriah Brookins (Cypress, CA) would score the first point of the set on a kill. The Lady Hawks would score the first five out of six points of the set to take a 5-1 lead. Morgan State would score the next four points to tie, 5-5. Next, the Lady Bears would score the next three out of four points, 8-6, forcing UMES to take a timeout. After the short break, the Lady Hawks would score the next two points on Robinson’s kill and Manu’s ace to tie, 8-8. The teams would exchange points until Morgan State would take control and lead, 18-14. The Lady Hawks would take their second timeout to stop the momentum. After the Lady Hawks’ timeout, the Lady Bears would score the next four points to take a commanding 22-14 lead. The Lady Hawks would fight to the very end, but Morgan State would outlast UMES and take the set, 25-19.

Other notable UMES’ performances include Woods posting three digs and two aces. Lewis added four kills, two assists, and two digs. Berry tallied three kills and a dig. Manu would score two aces and two digs. Brookins finished with eight kills and a dig. Brookins also posted a .538 hitting percentage in the match.

For the Lady Bears, Samantha Prescott led the team in kills (16) followed by Janelle Wilson (12). Ngebui Chafeh tallied 50 assists while Arianna Hayden added 19 digs in the win.

On Sunday (10/13), the Lady Hawks travel south to Hampton, VA to face the Lady Pirates of Hampton University. Match time is 3:00 p.m.
