PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – For Halloween (10/31), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team begins a four-match home-stand against the Lady Bears of Morgan State University. Recently, the Lady Hawks ended a six-match road trip and finishes the final four regular-season matches at William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

LAST MATCH

UMES lost to Howard in three straight sets, 3-0. In the first set, the Lady Hawks would rally late, but fall to the Lady Bison, 25-20. In set number two, UMES would continue to battle, but again, come up short versus Howard, 25-15. In the final set, Howard would finish the match by scoring the final seven out of 13 points to win the set, 25-18, and sweep the Lady Hawks, 3-0.

TOP PERFORMERS

For the second straight match, Diara Lewis (Columbia, SC) led the Hawk attack with seven kills. Freshman Precious Manu (Carson, CA) added nine assists, which was a team-high, while Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) led the team in digs (15).

Other notable Hawk performances included Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) posting five kills and a dig while Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI) added three kills and an assist. Li and Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) each tallied six assists in the loss.

MATCHUP PREVIEW

Entering Thursday night’s matchup, the Lady Hawks come in 3-17 overall (2-6 MEAC) while the Lady Bears enter with a 10-12 overall record (5-4 MEAC), including a sweep over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) North Division leader Hampton University, 3-0. Currently, UMES maintains the sixth spot whereas Morgan State holds the third spot in the MEAC North. Only the top four teams from the division qualify for the MEAC Tournament, which takes place at Coppin State University in Baltimore, MD.

On Oct. 11th, the Lady Bears defeated UMES in four sets, 3-1. In that contest, Robinson led the Lady Hawks with 14 kills and a .300 hitting percentage. Rosales had a solid performance posting 34 assists, five kills, and five digs while Li led the team in digs (13).

For Morgan State, three Lady Bears tallied 10+ kills, led by Samantha Prescott. Ngebui Chafeh recorded a match-high 50 assists while Arianna Hayden registered 19 digs in the victory.

Since that time, Morgan State is among the top in two defensive categories: opponent hitting percentage (pct.) and blocks per set. Both, Janelle Wilson and Zuri Smith, sit in the top-10 for two MEAC categories: hitting pct. & blocks per set. As of today, Wilson and Smith are seventh and eighth in the hitting pct. group, respectively. Also, both Lady Bears are tied for seventh in the blocks per set class.

For the Lady Hawks, Rosales continues to be ranked among the top helpers in the conference as she maintains ninth place (5.93). As of right now, Li is second in the MEAC conference in digs per set (4.27), trailing Florida A&M’s Joanie Del Castillo (4.84) and slightly above Coppin State’s Gabrelle Otero (4.21).

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

After Thursday’s match, the team will gear-up for a showdown with conference rival Coppin State on Sunday, Nov. 3rd. Match time is 3:00 p.m.
