PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Tomorrow (11/10), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team wraps-up their 2013 campaign as they host the Lady Pirates of Hampton University. Match time 3:00 p.m. In addition, lone Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) will be recognized on UMES Senior Day.

LAST MATCH

In the first set, the Lady Hawks would get on the board first, 1-0, but the Spartans would score the final 13 out of 19 points to win the set, 25-16, and take a lead in the match, 1-0. In set number two, Norfolk State grew their lead as much as eight points, 20-12, but the Lady Hawks never stopped believing as they went on a 14-4 run to win the set, 26-24, and tied the match, 1-1. In the third set, UMES continued to fight throughout the set, but the deficit was too great to overcome as they lost, 25-12. As a result, the Spartans would take a 2-1 match lead. In the fourth set, the Lady Hawks battled as they fought off multiple match points, but the Spartans would eventually take the set, 25-16, and match, 3-1.

TOP PERFORMERS

Lauren Berry (Bloomington, IL), Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI), and Allison Woods (Magnolia, TX) each tallied seven kills. Freshman Precious Manu (Carson, CA) pave the way for the Lady Hawks with 19 helpers after fellow freshman Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) went down due to an injury midway through the second set. Two UMES players posted double-digit digs, led by Li with 14 digs.


 

 

Other notable Hawk performances included Diara Lewis (Columbia, SC) tallying five kills and two digs while Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) recorded five kills, four digs, and a block. Aleksandra Manolova (Sofia, Bulgaria) also had 10 digs in the loss.

MATCHUP PREVIEW

In Sunday afternoon’s match, UMES comes in 3-20 overall (2-9 MEAC) whereas the Lady Pirates enter 15-10 (9-2 MEAC), including Friday night’s sweep over Delaware State, 3-0. The Lady Hawks remained in the sixth spot and eliminated from tournament play whereas the Lady Pirates hold the top-spot in the MEAC North.

On Oct. 13th, the Lady Hawks lost to Hampton, 3-0, but battled the Lady Pirates in every set. For UMES, Rosales had 19 assists, three kills, and a dig. Collectively, three Lady Hawks had five kills and a service ace each in the match, Smith, Lewis, and Moriah Brookins (Cypress, CA). Li led the team in digs (6).

For the Lady Pirates, Vendula Strakova led the team in kills (19) followed by Krista Kraskura (14). Bibiany Fonseca added 40 assists while Sheileen Pagen had 12 digs in the win.

Since then, the Lady Pirates lead the conference in several categories, including kills-per-set and assists-per-set. Hampton is led by their duo, Strakova and Fonseca. Strakova leads the nation in two categories, including kills (5.72). Fonseca leads the conference with 10.46 assists-per-contest.

For the Lady Hawks, Rosales is among the conference leaders in assists-per-set (6.22) whereas Li is one of the top leaders in digs, averaging 4.82 digs-per-set.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

After Sunday afternoon’s match, the Lady Hawks conclude their 2013 campaign and look to build for the 2014 volleyball season.
