LI EARNS ALL-MEAC & ACADEMIC TEAM HONORS

NORFOLK, Va. – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its 2013 MEAC Volleyball All-Academic & All-MEAC Team selections, both were announced today. Lone senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) earned both honors.
Academically, Li was among the 71 student-athletes chosen from the conference’s 13 institutions. Li achieved academic success during the school year by obtaining a 3.0 grade-point-average (GPA).
“I applaud our volleyball student-athletes who have maintained a 3.0 or better grade point average during the 2012-13 academic school year,” said Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas. “I would further like to commend the coaches and academic support staffs for their contributions to the academic success of our student-athletes.”
Hampton and Coppin State each had nine student-athletes recognized for their academic achievements followed by North Carolina Central with eight.
MEAC sophomore, junior, and senior student-athletes with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average as well as transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year are eligible for All-Academic accolades.
Furthermore, Li was also recognized for her performance on the court as she was named All-MEAC Third Team. This season, the Lady Hawk Libero appeared in all 84 sets with 385 digs (4.58 digs/set), 45 assists, six services aces, and two kills. Also, Li was among the conference leaders in digs-per-set averaging 4.58, trailing only Florida A&M’s Joanie Del Castillo (5.00). The Beijing-native posted seven career 20+ dig performances, including a career-high 39 against Morgan State University. Lastly, Li ended her collegiate career playing in 371 sets (108 matches) with 951 digs, 82 assists, eight kills, and seven aces.
Other notable recognitions included Hampton’s Vendula Strakova earning MEAC Player of the Year while Howard’s Katherine Broussard received MEAC Rookie of the Year. Tony Trifonov (Florida A&M) won MEAC Coach of the Year by guiding the Rattlers to an undefeated regular-season (10-0). All honors were voted by the MEAC’s volleyball head coaches and sports information directors.
Last Sunday’s match (11/10) ended the 2013 UMES volleyball season.
